The first time I heard the words ‘hammerhead shark’ as a child, the vision it brought to mind was a large fish with the head of a hammer that hit other fish in order to kill it and eat it. Sawfish? ….A giant fish in the shape of a saw that wreaked havoc by sawing fish in half. As an adult the names like forceps crab, nurse shark, jellyfish, etc. elicit the same sort of imagination.
Edie Goes The Wrong Way was a great opportunity to use these wonderful names in a fanciful and creative way, and my artist, Melissa Bailey, does not disappoint. Who knew that the challenge of writing children’s books could be so much fun as well?
