I've been using "tea towels" forever. I do keep a roll of paper towels under the sink. Keeping them out of sight, rather than out on the counter prevents me and mine from automatically snagging them. If I run into something horribly mucky, I make a decision about whether I'm going to need to use some pre-wash product on my towel as a result. But more often than not, older tea towels downgraded to rags take care of the mess. A monthly small load of rags in a mesh bag seems a good choice.

As for quality, I am using twenty year old Wms Sonoma towels that are just beginning to fray. Ikea towels are thinner, less sturdy, but really useful. They dry quickly, too. I will check out Target's towels when I need to reboot the stash.

Bestest,

Paper towels are among the worst waste that we have and now people are selling paper disposable hand wipes for the bathroom. Our consumerism will be the death of this planet.

[...] From rice to flour of all kinds, orzo and other pasta all organic and very useful. Its great to serve up just the right portions needed, no more, no less. I recently began keeping sauce jars and keeping them filled with many different varieties of beans, pasta, rice and other food to keep in the pantry as opposed to keeping my food in plastic containers. My good friend Susan Stoltz wrote a great article about the impact of plastics on our environment that you can read here. [...]

Hey I do this also and I've had friends criticize me for using more water, but these really don't take any more energy or resources when I wash them in my load of towels.
