The desert. The word elicits images of dry white bones sticking out of sand, looming cactus, and cowboys riding through arid vistas with shimmering heat waves that rise from the ground. When I moved here I wasn't staying long, after all, what could possibly have more scenic vistas than the Rocky Mountain states?
